The four noble professions in Chinese folklore are the scholar, farmer, fisherman and woodcutter. The woodcutter makes use of the mountains, the fisherman exploits the waters, the peasant causes the earth to bring forth fruits and the scholar can read the signs.

The word for cat (mao) is a homonym for the age 70, and the word for butterfly (die) is a homonym for age 80, so cat and butterfly together form a rebus to express the wish that the recipient will have a long life.

Glass, semi translucent grey with a metal mount at the neck to disguise broken glass; painted in famille rose enamels with a boy on a buffalo playing his flute in a mountainous landscape setting; the reverse with birds in flight above a lake with blossoming trees; each shoulder with inset panels and inscription forming a poetic couplet which reads :

bei mu er heng duan di

sheng kou chui chu tai ping ge

which translates as

‘On the back of an ox a young cowherd plays a transverse flute

And whistles out the ‘Ballad of Taiping’’


These are both poetry and paintings from as early as the Song Dynasty representing the herd-boy playing his flute on the buffalo's back.


The ‘Ballad of Taiping’ was a famous air originating in a popular operatic genre known as lianhualuo ‘Falling Lotus Flowers’, which was suppressed early in the Ming Dynasty because of some subversive lyrics. This ballad was then renamed, and became widely known in its own right.


The base with a seal-mark which may be translated as Wanya xuan

The Wanya xuan hall mark is more usually found on plain glass bottles of elegant simple form.

73. Jadeite, of very dark colour which a transmitted bright light reveals to be a very dark green, one side incised with a scholar in his Summer pavilion amongst rocks and trees and a four-character inscription above which reads ‘qiu lin gao shi’ The Eminent Scholar of the Autumn Grove

The reverse with a long inscription which reads ‘shu lin ping ban chang qiu yuan zhong you ji ren bi shi xuan bu lü bu shan zi ling xiao yu xun ya diao wu xian yuan’ which may be translated as:

‘A sparse grove level with the slope overlooks the autumn plain

In its midst a recluse flees the clamour of the world

En déshabille he sighs to himself

Seeking an elegant tune to grace the five strings’

below the characters yu zhi‘ (‘made by Imperial Command’) picked out in red.

The expression shu lin ‘sparse grove’ is a quotation from a poem by the famous Northern Song Dynasty official, painter and poet Su Shi (also known as Su Dongpo) A.D.1037-1101.

In the course of his epic confrontation with his enemy Wang Anshi, Dongpo spent time in internal exile on the Yangzi River in Hubei Province, where he went on his famous nocturnal boat trip to the (presumed site of the battle of the) Red Cliff, writing two extremely famous prose poems on the subject.


74. Nephrite, the olive-coloured stone with a pleasantly soft patina, the mottled darker area carved to depict Liu Hai enticing his three-legged toad to safety with his string of cash, one shoulder with ochre skin carved as a deer, and with darker grey material carved as rockwork around the base.

80. Fruitwood, of rounded form with rounded raised frames, the front with a bamboo plant and inscription which reads jing yi this is most likely to be a quotation referring to bamboo (and maybe by extension to a nobleman) from one of the ancient Odes, and probably means simply Oh how Beautiful ! ; the reverse with an inscription in archaic script reading yan nian yi shou (To Prolong One's Years and Increase One's Longevity); the base-mark carved as a mirror image and was clearly used as a seal. The characters are stylised but may be translated as ya tang( Hall of Elegance).

Laque burgauté, the wood covered with black lacquer and inlaid with minute pieces of mother-of-pearl to depict a goose in flight above birds looking upwards, the reverse with two geese descending towards the birds on the ground to; the base with a silver inlaid mark which reads qian li, art name of Jiang Qianli a 17th Century laque burgaute artist.

Lacquer on wood, inlaid with silver and gold wires to depict a figure on a sampan navigating towards a rocky outcrop with a weeping willow; an inscription to one side reads renchen dong ri xiaoshan ([Created by] Xiaoshan on a winter's day in the renchen year), the reverse with a wine goblet and a tripod with the four character inscription xing zhi ya ding (Xing Wine Goblet and Ya Tripod). The characters xing and ya most probably refer to well-known ancient vessels recorded in the epigraphical literature.

86. Smoky crystal, painted on the inside with the snowy scene from an episode of The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. On one side, Liu Bei and his brother ask for Zhuge Liang, the great strategist, expecting that the approaching figure on a donkey might be he. The man inside the hut informs them that the approaching figure is Huang Chengyan, Zhuge Liang’s father-in-law, accompanied by his attendant with a double gourd of wine attached to a stick resting on his shoulder; signed Ye Zhongsan and dated Autumn day, 1925.
